the first pic looks like oak and the painted look like pine or fur.
That's what we were thinking. We know the downstairs floors are oak. But I have a hard time telling the difference between pine and fir, even though we have heart pine in the bungalow. They're pretty closely related anyway, so it's hard to say. My guess is pine, only because of our location... but who knows! Now we just need to decide whether to sand and refinish or leave the carpet. Time is the ultimate factor...
